Challenge
A regional health and social service network identified a growing, unsustainable strain on informal caregivers, particularly among racialized and low-income communities. Caregiving responsibilities were rapidly intensifying due to the compounding pressures of an aging population, rising rates of chronic illness, and significant gaps in formal care systems. Despite bearing this immense burden, these caregivers remained largely invisible within existing policy frameworks and service designs, resulting in severely limited access to essential supports, financial resources, and formal recognition within the broader health system.
Approach
DiversityTalk conducted a comprehensive needs assessment and targeted policy analysis designed to thoroughly understand complex caregiving dynamics and identify strategic intervention points. Our process commenced with extensive qualitative research, engaging directly with caregivers to accurately capture their lived experiences, daily challenges, and resilient coping strategies.
Building upon this foundational understanding, we conducted a rigorous analysis of existing caregiver support programs and policy frameworks. This analysis successfully identified stark inequities in access to critical resources, specifically highlighting systemic barriers to financial assistance, respite care, and mental health supports.
Synthesizing these insights, our team developed a robust, holistic caregiver support strategy that seamlessly integrated the health, social, and economic dimensions of caregiving. Throughout the initiative, we consistently emphasized caregiving as a pressing public health issue and a vital social policy concern, effectively shifting the narrative away from the assumption that it is merely a private responsibility.
Outcome
This rigorous initiative successfully generated a comprehensive set of actionable recommendations designed to significantly strengthen caregiver support systems across the region. Key outcomes of our intervention included a marked increase in the visibility of caregiving within the network’s institutional planning and policy discussions.
Furthermore, we provided detailed recommendations for expanding culturally relevant and accessible support services, ensuring they met the specific needs of marginalized communities. Our team also developed a scalable framework for seamlessly integrating caregiver considerations directly into ongoing care planning and service delivery models. Ultimately, this work clearly identified strategic opportunities for cross-sector collaboration, empowering the network to effectively address systemic gaps and provide meaningful, sustained support to its most vulnerable caregivers.
