Strengthening Patient Partner Engagement in Clinical Trials

Challenge

A major clinical research initiative aimed to significantly improve diversity and inclusion within its trials, with a specific focus on engaging patient partners from underrepresented communities. However, the existing engagement strategies were severely limited, frequently tokenistic, and consistently failed to address the deep structural barriers hindering meaningful participation. Consequently, the research team recognized an urgent need for a more robust, equity-informed approach to patient engagement capable of simultaneously enhancing both recruitment efforts and overall research quality.

Approach

DiversityTalk provided comprehensive support in developing a patient partner engagement framework firmly grounded in participatory and equity-centered principles. Our process began with a rigorous review of the initiative’s existing clinical trial engagement practices, allowing us to accurately identify critical gaps in representation and systemic shortcomings.

Building upon these findings, we developed specialized educational materials and targeted training modules tailored for both patient partners and the core research teams. We subsequently facilitated interactive workshops designed to build sustainable capacity for meaningful engagement across the entire research lifecycle.

Crucially, our strategy ensured the seamless integration of vital equity considerations directly into the initiative’s recruitment, retention, and knowledge translation protocols. Throughout the process, we strategically positioned patient partners as active, essential contributors to research design and implementation, fundamentally shifting their role from passive subjects to empowered collaborators.

Outcome

This rigorous initiative successfully strengthened the capacity of the research teams to engage diverse patient populations in deeply meaningful ways. Key outcomes of our intervention included the establishment of significantly improved frameworks for inclusive recruitment and sustained, long-term engagement.

Furthermore, the process fostered a heightened awareness among researchers regarding the structural barriers that disproportionately affect participation in clinical research. Our team also achieved enhanced alignment between the initiative’s research priorities and the authentic needs of the communities they serve. Finally, we developed a comprehensive suite of tools and resources to robustly support ongoing patient partner involvement. Ultimately, this comprehensive work contributed directly to more equitable and responsive clinical research practices, carrying profound implications for broader health system innovation.
